René Caillié was a French explorer who in 1828 became the first non-Muslim European to visit Timbuktu in present-day Mali and return alive to tell of it. Disguised as an Arab Muslim traveler, he journeyed across West Africa from the Atlantic coast over the course of more than a year before reaching the fabled city. Upon his return to France, the Société de Géographie de Paris awarded him its grand prize for the achievement. His published travel accounts provided Europeans with some of the first reliable firsthand descriptions of the West African interior.
