Robert Carneiro

The circumscription theory, formulated by Robert Carneiro, argues that states arise in areas where agricultural land is geographically or socially constrained. When population pressure increases in these circumscribed areas (like fertile river valleys), losers in warfare cannot flee, forcing them to submit to the winners and creating centralized, stratified states.

Robert Carneiro spent the majority of his illustrious career as an anthropologist and curator at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. He worked extensively in this role from the 1950s until his death in 2020.

Carneiro officially introduced his highly influential circumscription theory in a 1970 paper published in the journal Science. This publication fundamentally changed how archaeologists and anthropologists understand the origins of pristine states like the Inca and Egyptian empires.

Carneiro's early fieldwork was heavily concentrated in the Amazon Basin, specifically studying the indigenous tribes of the Kuikuru in Brazil. His observations of tribal warfare and agricultural limitations in the Xingu River region directly influenced the development of his circumscription theory.
