Once widespread across the western and central deserts, the species has suffered significant population decline due to habitat loss, predation by introduced predators, and changes in fire regimes. It is currently classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN and is characterized by its reddish-brown fur and rabbit-like appearance, with adults weighing between 1 and 2 kilograms. The species is nocturnal and feeds primarily on grasses, herbs, and shrubs.
