Salyut 4

description Salyut 4 Overview

Salyut 4 was a Soviet civilian space station launched on December 26, 1974, into low Earth orbit as part of the long-running Salyut program. It hosted two successful crewed missions, Soyuz 17 and Soyuz 18, during which cosmonauts conducted solar physics, astrophysics, and Earth observation experiments using onboard instruments including solar telescopes and X-ray spectrometers. An uncrewed Soyuz vehicle designated Soyuz 20 also docked with the station to test modified systems. Salyut 4 was deliberately deorbited in February 1977 after completing its operational mission.

help Salyut 4 FAQ

When was the Salyut 4 space station launched?
