Sandalops melancholicus is a glass squid in the family Cranchiidae, commonly called the sandal-eyed squid or melancholy cranch squid. It occurs in tropical and subtropical ocean waters around the world and moves through epipelagic, mesopelagic, and bathypelagic zones as it matures; adults can reach about 110 mm in mantle length. Juveniles have long tubular eyes directed upward, while later stages develop more rounded, forward-oriented eyes and two adjacent photophores on each eye.
