help Sanganeb Atoll Reef FAQ

How do divers reach Sanganeb Atoll Reef?

Sanganeb is an isolated offshore reef roughly 25 kilometers northeast of Port Sudan, so visitors generally arrive by dive boat or liveaboard. Its exposed position and steep walls can produce currents better suited to experienced divers.

What marine animals can divers see at Sanganeb?

The reef supports dense Red Sea fish communities, corals, rays, turtles, and pelagic predators. Hammerhead sharks and manta rays are among the animals associated with its deep, current-swept outer walls, although sightings are never guaranteed.

Is Sanganeb Atoll a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

Yes. In 2016 UNESCO inscribed Sanganeb Marine National Park together with Dungonab Bay and Mukkawar Island Marine National Park as a serial natural World Heritage property.

What is the structure standing above Sanganeb Reef?

A prominent lighthouse marks the atoll and remains its best-known above-water structure. It serves navigation near the approaches to Port Sudan and provides a striking reference point amid the open Red Sea.
