Satish Dhawan

Satish Dhawan was an eminent Indian aerospace engineer who served as the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) from 1972 to 1984. He is widely considered the father of experimental fluid dynamics research in India. His leadership was crucial in shaping the country's early space program.

During his tenure at ISRO, Satish Dhawan directed India's early satellite and launch vehicle development programs. Most notably, he guided the SLV-3 rocket project, which successfully placed the Rohini satellite into orbit. He also established the philosophy of making space technology benefit the common man.

The primary spaceport of India, the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), is named in his honor. It is located in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. The facility serves as the main launch site for all of India's orbital and suborbital missions.

Satish Dhawan served as the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation for over a decade, from 1972 to 1984. He succeeded Vikram Sarabhai and took the organization to new heights. His tenure is often referred to as the golden era of Indian space exploration.
