Shigaraki-yaki

Shigaraki-yaki is renowned for its rugged, earthy aesthetic achieved through wood-firing and the use of coarse, naturally sandy clay from the Shiga region. The kiln firing produces distinctive orange-red flame markings and a natural ash glaze that forms on the surface, making each piece unique.

Shigaraki-yaki is produced in the town of Shigaraki in Shiga Prefecture, Japan, one of the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan recognized for their long pottery traditions. The area has been a pottery center since the medieval period, and Shigaraki clay is prized for its high silica content and coarse texture.

Wood-firing is central to the Shigaraki-yaki tradition, as fly ash from the burning wood lands on the pottery and melts into a natural glaze during the high temperatures of the anagama or noborigama kilns. This process creates unpredictable surface effects including the orange-red scorch marks and glassy ash deposits that define the style.

Shigaraki-yaki has been produced since around the 12th century, originating as utilitarian storage jars and vessels. The style gained recognition during the Muromachi period when tea masters embraced its rustic aesthetic for use in the Japanese tea ceremony, and Shigaraki is recognized as one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns.
