Sho Shogi is a historical Japanese board game from the Muromachi period (1336–1573) played on a 9×9 grid. It is recognized as a direct precursor to modern shogi, differing primarily in its lack of the drop rule that characterizes the contemporary game. In Sho Shogi, captured pieces were removed from play rather than being returned to the board by the capturing player. The game used a piece called the drunkard (suishi) that occupied a position near the king and had no counterpart in modern shogi.
