Sinhagad Fort

description Sinhagad Fort Overview

Sinhagad Fort is a hill fort near Pune in Maharashtra, India, formerly known as Kondhana. In 1670, Maratha forces led by Tanaji Malusare attacked and recaptured the fort from Mughal control; Tanaji was killed during the assault, after which the fort was renamed Sinhagad, meaning Lion Fort. Its location on a steep ridge made it a defensive position overlooking routes through the Pune region.
