description Pratapgad Fort Overview
Pratapgad is a seventeenth-century hill fort in Satara district, Maharashtra, India, built for the Maratha ruler Shivaji in the Western Ghats. Its position on a mountain spur helped control routes through the surrounding terrain, and the complex includes defensive walls, gateways, and a temple associated with the fort. In 1659, Pratapgad was the site of Shivaji's battle with Afzal Khan, a general of the Adil Shahi ruler of Bijapur, in which Afzal Khan was killed.
