help SKF HDDF FAQ
What type of machinery is the SKF HDDF seal designed for?
SKF developed the HDDF metal face seal for severe, low-speed applications such as tracked vehicles, mining equipment, mixers and conveyors. It protects bearings and other lubricated components from sand, soil, mud and water.
How does an HDDF seal keep contaminants out?
An HDDF assembly uses two identical metal sealing rings supported by elastomeric cup springs. The springs maintain face contact while the wear-resistant cast-alloy rings form the rotating seal.
Can an SKF HDDF seal retain both oil and grease?
Yes, SKF specifies HDDF metal face seals for retaining either oil or grease in demanding operating conditions. They are especially useful where a conventional radial shaft seal would face heavy contamination.
Is the SKF HDDF suitable for high rotational speeds?
HDDF seals are intended for relatively low circumferential speeds, not high-speed shafts. Their strength is severe-duty contaminant exclusion rather than the low friction expected from a high-speed lip seal.
