help SKF HS7 FAQ

Is the SKF HS7 intended for oil or grease retention?

The HS7 is designed for grease-lubricated applications, not for retaining low-viscosity oil. SKF positions designs such as the HS8 as better choices when stronger lubricant retention or water exclusion is required.

Why is the SKF HS7 easier to install than other split seals?

Its split construction allows it to be fitted around a shaft without removing the shaft or dismantling the entire machine. The enclosed control-wire spring also simplifies reconnecting the sealing lip during installation.

Does an SKF HS7 require a cover plate?

Yes, SKF specifies a cover plate to stabilize the HS7 axially in the housing bore. The split should also be positioned at the 12 o'clock position to reduce leakage at the joint.

What shaft speeds can an SKF HS7 handle?

SKF's industrial seal guidance lists a maximum shaft surface speed of about 7.5 metres per second for the HS7. The actual safe limit also depends on temperature, lubrication, shaft condition, runout, and other operating conditions.
