description Slash'EM Overview

Slash'EM (Super Lots of Added Stuff Hack - Extended Magic) is a variant of the roguelike game NetHack, initiated by Warren Cheung in 1997. Building upon NetHack's foundation, Slash'EM introduced numerous additions including new character classes like the Necromancer and Flame Mage, additional monsters, items, and dungeon branches. Many features first developed in Slash'EM were later incorporated into NetHack proper. The game maintained NetHack's turn-based, grid-based gameplay while expanding content significantly, and itself spawned further variants like Slash'EM Extended.

help Slash'EM FAQ

What does Slash'EM add to NetHack?

Slash'EM adds many monsters, items, spells, artifacts and dungeon branches to the NetHack 3.4.3 framework. It also introduces five roles, including the Flame Mage, Ice Mage and Undead Slayer.

What does the name Slash'EM stand for?

The expanded title is Super Lotsa Added Stuff Hack, Extended Magic. The name reflects the variant's goal of combining NetHack with content from earlier patches and variants.

Is Slash'EM harder than standard NetHack?

It is generally more hostile in the early game because its expanded monster roster can produce dangerous encounters from the first dungeon level. Experienced NetHack players must also relearn strategies for new races, roles and optional branches.

Can Slash'EM be played online?

Yes, Slash'EM can be played through public servers such as Hardfought and slashem.me. This preserves the traditional terminal interface while avoiding the need to compile the game locally.
