It occurs in the Indo-Pacific and has been recorded from roughly 125 to 820 metres, including bathyal depths. The species is distinguished from related gulper sharks by its comparatively small, narrow pectoral fins. It is adapted to life in deep marine environments rather than shallow coastal waters.
