help Sõrve Lighthouse FAQ
Can visitors climb Sõrve Lighthouse?
The current lighthouse has an interior stairway and is opened to visitors seasonally when local operating conditions permit. From the top, visitors can look across the Irbe Strait between Estonia's Saaremaa island and Latvia.
Is the present Sõrve Lighthouse the original 18th-century tower?
No. A beacon was established at Sõrve in the 17th century, and later stone towers served the site, but warfare destroyed the previous lighthouse during World War II. The present reinforced-concrete tower was completed in 1960.
How tall is Sõrve Lighthouse?
The black-and-white concrete tower is about 52 metres tall. Its height and position at the southern tip of Saaremaa make it one of Estonia's most conspicuous coastal landmarks.
Why is the Sõrve Peninsula important for shipping?
The peninsula marks the northern side of the Irbe Strait, the main maritime approach between the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga. The lighthouse warns vessels away from the long, shallow spit extending beyond Sõrve's shoreline.
