SS Portland

description SS Portland Overview

SS Portland was an American sidewheel passenger steamship that operated between Boston and Portland, Maine. It sank with everyone aboard during the severe New England storm of November 1898, although the exact number of people lost remains uncertain because the passenger list was incomplete. The disaster became the storm's defining event, and the weather system is consequently remembered as the Portland Gale. The wreck lies off the coast of Massachusetts.
