Stanley Mills

Stanley Mills was founded in the late 18th century as a cotton spinning and textile manufacturing complex on the banks of the River Tay in Perth and Kinross, Scotland. The site was specifically chosen to leverage the River Tay's powerful water flow to drive the mill machinery during Scotland's industrial expansion.

Stanley Mills is operated as a heritage site by Historic Environment Scotland, with restored mill buildings featuring interactive exhibits about the textile industry and workers' lives. Visitors can explore the Bell Mill and Mid Mill, which are among the earliest surviving factory buildings of the Industrial Revolution in Scotland.

The complex operated as a textile manufacturing site for roughly two centuries, passing through multiple phases of production, ownership changes, and periods of expansion and decline. The mills finally ceased industrial operations in the late 20th century before being converted into a heritage attraction.

Stanley Mills was developed in the late 1700s with backing from local Scottish entrepreneurs who recognized the River Tay's potential for powering industrial-scale cotton spinning. The Bell Mill, one of the complex's earliest surviving structures, was a product of this initial construction phase during the height of Scotland's industrial revolution.
