description Store Mosse Overview
In Småland, southern Sweden, Store Mosse National Park protects an extensive raised bog together with wet forests, lakes and sandy areas. Established in 1982, the park contains habitats that support specialized plants and varied birdlife. Its open peatlands give it a character distinct from the forests that cover much of the surrounding region. Boardwalks and marked trails provide routes across otherwise waterlogged ground while helping limit damage to sensitive vegetation.
The wider wetland complex is recognized under the Ramsar Convention as a wetland of international importance. Store Mosse suits walkers and birdwatchers interested in experiencing a large bog without treating its soft ground as ordinary walking terrain. Its main interest lies in the functioning wetland itself, where water levels and slowly accumulating peat influence both vegetation and the places birds use.
