help Table Mountain FAQ

How did Table Mountain get its name?

Table Mountain gets its name from its iconic, perfectly flat summit that overlooks the city of Cape Town, South Africa. The plateau is approximately three kilometers from side to side. It is often covered by a thick layer of clouds known locally as the "tablecloth."

How do visitors get to the top of Table Mountain?

The most popular way to reach the top is via the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, which features rotating cabins offering 360-degree views. Alternatively, hikers can tackle various trails, such as the popular Platteklip Gorge route. The cableway officially opened in 1929 and has since been significantly upgraded.

What kind of rock is Table Mountain made of?

Table Mountain is primarily composed of hard, erosion-resistant sandstone, known as Table Mountain Sandstone. This sits atop a base of shale and Cape Granite. These rocks were deposited hundreds of millions of years ago and have since been pushed upward by tectonic forces.

What is unique about the biodiversity on Table Mountain?

The mountain is home to an incredibly high number of endemic plant species that exist nowhere else in the world. It sits within the Cape Floral Region, which contains more plant species than the entire United Kingdom. Many of these plants, such as the Silver Tree, belong to the unique fynbos vegetation type.
