Takachiho Shrine

Takachiho Shrine is a Shinto site located in the town of Takachiho in Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan. It is situated near the famous Takachiho Gorge. The shrine is easily accessible for tourists exploring the northern region of Miyazaki.

The shrine is strongly associated with the Japanese creation myth, specifically the legend of the sun goddess Amaterasu hiding in a cave. It was established in the late 19th century by merging several older local shrines. This consolidation occurred during the Meiji era.

The shrine is situated in close proximity to Takachiho Gorge, a stunning narrow chasm with sheer cliffs of volcanic basalt. Visitors to the shrine can also witness the nightly Yokagura dances, which are traditional sacred performances. These dances recount the myths of the Shinto deities.

While the local traditions are centuries old, the current Takachiho Shrine was officially established in the late 19th century. This happened when the government merged several older local shrines into one central location. The exact origins of the original sites predate the Meiji consolidation.
