The tawny emperor, in the genus Asterocampa, is a North American butterfly associated with hackberry trees. Its caterpillars feed on hackberry foliage, and the species is therefore often found near its larval host plants. Adults have subdued brown and tan wing patterns that provide camouflage, while the insect's life cycle and classification place it within the nymphalid butterfly family.
