description The Adjuster Overview
Written and directed by Atom Egoyan, The Adjuster is a Canadian drama released in 1991. Elias Koteas plays Noah Render, an insurance adjuster who becomes unusually intimate with clients displaced from their homes. His wife, Hera, works as a film censor and secretly records restricted material. Their occupations place both characters in positions where observing or helping others becomes entangled with personal desire.
Fragmented storytelling and staged encounters make the film less straightforward than a conventional erotic thriller. Repeated acts of watching raise questions about voyeurism and professional power, while unstable personal boundaries connect sexuality to alienation. It suits viewers comfortable with ambiguity and a narrative that withholds easy explanations of behavior. The distinctive element is Egoyan's treatment of apparently routine work as a setting for troubling exchanges of care, control, and intimacy.
