Theodoros Kolokotronis

Kolokotronis is most famous for his decisive victory at the Battle of Dervenakia in 1822, where his strategic ambush destroyed an Ottoman army led by Dramali Mahmud Pasha. This battle effectively ended the Ottoman campaign to crush the Greek revolt in the Peloponnese.

Kolokotronis served as the foremost military commander of the Greek revolutionary forces, organizing irregular fighters into an effective army using guerrilla tactics suited to the mountainous Greek terrain. His leadership was instrumental in securing the Peloponnese as the stronghold of the revolution.

Yes, during the Greek civil wars of 1823–1825, Kolokotronis was briefly imprisoned by rival Greek factions on the island of Hydra. He was later released when the Greek leadership realized they needed his military expertise against renewed Ottoman offensives.

Kolokotronis is buried in Athens, and a famous equestrian statue of him stands in front of the Old Parliament building. He lived to see Greek independence achieved and remains one of the most revered figures in modern Greek national history.
