Thomas Midgley Jr. was an American mechanical and chemical engineer whose industrial research produced tetraethyllead for gasoline and the chlorofluorocarbon refrigerant later marketed as Freon. Leaded gasoline helped reduce engine knocking, while chlorofluorocarbons were used in refrigeration and other cooling systems. Both technologies later became associated with lead pollution and damage to the stratospheric ozone layer.
