Tigana

Tigana is a 1990 high fantasy novel about a fictional peninsula subjugated by two rival sorcerers. The plot centers on a rebellion fighting to reclaim their homeland, which has been magically cursed so that its very name cannot be heard or remembered by outsiders.

Tigana was written by the acclaimed Canadian author Guy Gavriel Kay. Published in 1990, it is one of his most famous standalone works, building on the literary legacy he developed after finishing Christopher Tolkien's 'The Silmarillion' in the early 1980s.

In the novel, a victorious sorcerer-king cast a devastating spell to punish the defeated province, magically erasing the name Tigana from the memory of anyone who did not grow up there. This forces the protagonists to fight a war of rebellion where they struggle to even communicate their national identity to the world.

Guy Gavriel Kay heavily based the political dynamics and Renaissance-era aesthetic of Tigana on medieval and Renaissance Italy. The novel uses this historical inspiration to deeply explore themes of memory, grief, tyranny, and the cultural power of a name.
