Tokat Castle

description Tokat Castle Overview

Tokat Castle is a hilltop fortress in Tokat, in northern Turkey. Local historical material traces the site to the Roman period and describes roughly five centuries of Byzantine rule, followed by control under several Turkish and Ottoman states; its steep rock setting also gave it a natural defensive role. The castle is associated with accounts that Vlad III of Wallachia, known as Vlad the Impaler, was held there under Ottoman supervision, although the connection is presented as a historical claim rather than a proven fact.
