Tsaranoro Massif

The Tsaranoro Massif is located in southern Madagascar, near the Andringitra mountain region. Its long, steep granite walls rise dramatically from the surrounding valley floor and have become a major destination for rock climbers visiting Madagascar.

The massif features comparatively clean granite faces that extend for hundreds of meters, offering sustained multi-pitch free and aid climbing routes on high-quality rock. Routes such as the 700-meter Brigitte on the Tsaranoro Be face exemplify the long, committing climbs that have drawn international climbers since the area was developed in the 1990s.

The granite walls of the Tsaranoro Massif rise roughly 600 to 800 meters from the valley floor, with the highest point of the massif exceeding 2,000 meters above sea level. These dimensions place the cliffs among the most significant big-wall climbing objectives in Africa.

The most favorable climbing conditions are during Madagascar's dry season, roughly from May to October, when temperatures are cooler and the rock faces are less likely to be wet. During the rainy season from November to April, the granite can become treacherously slick and the approaches more difficult.
