description Tupolev Tu-144 Overview

The Tupolev Tu-144 was a Soviet supersonic passenger aircraft designed by the Tupolev bureau. Its prototype first flew on 31 December 1968, two months before Concorde; Aeroflot began passenger service on 1 November 1977 on the Moscow to Alma-Ata route, but discontinued it in 1978 after 102 passenger flights. NASA records that 17 aircraft were built, including the prototype, test versions and production aircraft.
