Ulvaria obscura

description Ulvaria obscura Overview

Ulvaria obscura is a green macroalga found in cold temperate and polar coastal waters of the North Atlantic and North Pacific. It forms broad, dark green blades that can grow into dense mats on intertidal and shallow subtidal surfaces. The species is notable for producing dimethylsulfoniopropionate, or DMSP, a sulfur-containing compound involved in marine biogeochemical processes, and its mats can limit light and space for organisms below them.
