description Vanuatu Overview
Vanuatu is a Melanesian archipelago of roughly 80 islands in the South Pacific, administered jointly by Britain and France as the New Hebrides until independence in 1980. Its capital is Port Vila, and its people speak Bislama, English, French and more than one hundred indigenous languages, making it one of the world's most linguistically diverse countries. The volcanic islands, including active Mount Yasur on Tanna, attract diving and other tourism. Pentecost Island is the origin of land diving, the ritual precursor to bungee jumping.
