Vuoniemi Esker

Vuoniemi Esker is an approximately four-kilometre glacial ridge in Rääkkylä, Finland. It projects into Lake Pyhäselkä and is recognized as a protected landscape.

An esker is a long ridge of sand and gravel deposited by meltwater flowing through or beneath a glacier. Vuoniemi Esker is therefore a glacial landform rather than a volcanic ridge or ordinary coastal dune.

The ridge lies in Rääkkylä and projects into Lake Pyhäselkä. Its position at the lake gives the landform a distinctive peninsula-like appearance.

It is protected because its long glacial ridge and lake setting form an important landscape. The protection helps preserve both the geological landform and its visual character.
