description Walter Freeman Overview
Walter Jackson Freeman (1895–1972) was an American neurologist who popularized the prefrontal lobotomy in the United States. After introducing the operation with surgeon James Watts in 1936, he developed the transorbital or 'ice pick' lobotomy in the mid-1940s, a faster procedure he could perform outside a conventional operating room. He performed or supervised several thousand lobotomies between the 1930s and 1960s, often touring widely to demonstrate the technique. The procedure's severe neurological side effects made him a deeply controversial figure in American medicine.
