description Wild Parsnip Overview
Wild parsnip (Pastinaca sativa) is a Eurasian biennial herb in the carrot family that has become naturalized across much of North America. In its first year it forms a basal rosette; in its second it produces a tall, branched stalk with yellow flowers arranged in flat-topped umbels. Sap from the stems, leaves, or other above-ground parts contains furanocoumarins that can cause phytophotodermatitis, including burn-like rashes and blisters when exposed skin receives sunlight or ultraviolet light.
