Xochicalco

Visitors to Xochicalco in Morelos, Mexico, can explore a main ceremonial plaza, a well-preserved ball court, and the Temple of the Feathered Serpent, which features elaborate carvings. The site also includes an underground observatory where sunlight passes through a chimney shaft at specific times of year. Most structures date to the Epiclassic period, roughly 700 to 900 CE.

Xochicalco was built as a fortified hilltop settlement following the decline of Teotihuacan around 700 CE, when multiple regional powers competed to fill the political vacuum. Its defensive walls, moats, and strategic hilltop position reflect the unstable political landscape of the Epiclassic period in central Mexico. It likely drew populations from various cultural groups, including Maya influences visible in its art.

The underground observatory at Xochicalco consists of a cave with a man-made chimney shaft cut into the rock. On certain days around May 14 and July 29, sunlight passes directly through the shaft and projects onto the cave floor, marking key agricultural dates. It is one of the few known cave observatories from Mesoamerica.

Xochicalco is located in the state of Morelos, Mexico, approximately 120 kilometers south of Mexico City. The site is near the town of Miacatlán and is accessible by car in roughly two hours from the capital. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.
