Zografou Monastery

Zografou Monastery is traditionally associated with Bulgarian monastic heritage and has long served as a major center of Bulgarian literary and religious culture on Mount Athos. According to tradition, it was founded by three Bulgarian monks. It remains one of the 20 ruling monasteries of the Mount Athos community.

Zografou Monastery is one of the 20 sovereign monasteries on Mount Athos, and in the traditional hierarchy of Athonite monasteries it ranks ninth. It is an active coenobitic monastery. The monastery is dedicated to Saint George and houses the famous icon of Saint George known as the Zografou icon.

Zografou Monastery is located on the eastern side of the Mount Athos peninsula in northern Greece, accessible primarily by boat to the port of Dafni and then by foot along mountain paths. Access to Mount Athos is restricted to male visitors with a special permit (diamonitirion). The monastery is surrounded by forest on the slopes of the Athonite peninsula.

Zografou Monastery is associated with a famous Athonite legend in which a miraculous icon of Saint George was said to have condemned a renegade monk who had agreed to surrender the monastery to Latin crusaders. According to tradition, the monk was found hanged before the icon. The monastery is also linked to the memory of three martyred monks who resisted pressure from Latin Emperor Baldwin II.
