Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine (Speed)

Published in 1611, it was the first atlas devoted entirely to the British Isles, covering all the counties of England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland in a single unified work. It was also the first major English-language atlas produced in England.

The atlas contains fifty-four detailed county maps, each enriched with decorative borders featuring local nobility coats of arms and illustrations of significant battles. Many maps also include inset town plans, making it an especially rich visual and historical document.

The maps were primarily engraved by Jodocus Hondius in Amsterdam, one of the leading cartographic engravers of the era. Speed relied on earlier cartographic sources, including the work of William Camden and Christopher Saxton, for much of the underlying geographic data.
