Aquarium of Genoa

The Aquarium of Genoa was built for Genoa Expo 1992, which marked 500 years since Columbus's 1492 voyage. It sits in the Porto Antico, the Old Harbour area redeveloped by Renzo Piano.

It is widely described as Italy's largest aquarium and one of Europe's major aquariums. The complex has dozens of tanks and millions of liters of water in the Old Harbour of Genoa.

Renzo Piano was the architect behind the building and the wider Porto Antico redevelopment. The aquarium's early exhibit design is also associated with Peter Chermayeff and Cambridge Seven Associates.

The aquarium is next to other Porto Antico attractions such as the Biosfera, the Bigo panoramic lift, and Galata Museo del Mare. That makes it a waterfront cultural stop rather than an isolated aquarium visit.
