description James Wyld the Elder Overview
James Wyld the Elder (1790–1836) was a prominent British cartographer and map publisher who founded the Wyld map publishing house in London. Appointed Geographer to King George IV and William IV, he took over the renowned map business of William Faden in 1823. Wyld maintained a significant commercial presence on Charing Cross Road, where he produced and sold a wide array of maps, globes, and atlases. His business was later continued by his son, James Wyld the Younger, who further expanded the firm's operations.
