Jacques-Nicolas Bellin

Jacques-Nicolas Bellin was an 18th-century French hydrographer who served as the chief cartographer for the French Navy. Over his long and distinguished career, he produced over 800 highly detailed nautical maps to aid French naval and commercial expansion.

Bellin notably contributed to the monumental *Encyclopédie* edited by Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert, beginning around 1751. He provided all the detailed maps for this famous encyclopedia, vastly expanding public access to modern geographical data.

Bellin created highly accurate maps of various global regions, with a particular focus on North America and the French colonies. His maps of the Great Lakes region and the Saint Lawrence River were considered the most authoritative cartographic sources of the era.

Bellin was known for his highly practical, clean, and precise nautical charts rather than decorative extravagance. His focus on accurate coastlines, maritime hazards, and navigational routes helped standardize modern hydrography.
