Pink-throated brilliant

The pink-throated brilliant is a hummingbird belonging to the genus Heliodoxa, which translates to 'sun glory.' These birds are known for their brilliant, jewel-like colors that glitter in the sunlight. The genus includes other flashy species like the Empress Brilliant.

This species is native to the humid montane forests of South America, specifically found in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. They prefer steep, cloud-covered slopes at high elevations. They are most commonly spotted in the foothills of the eastern Andes.

The bird is most easily recognized by the bright, pinkish-red throat patch, or gorget, that gleams brightly on the male. It also features a striking emerald green body with a slightly forked tail. Females are generally duller with a speckled throat and white belly.

The species was officially named and described by the prominent English ornithologist John Gould in 1860. Gould was famous for his highly detailed and beautifully illustrated works on hummingbirds and birds of paradise. His identification helped differentiate it from other similar brilliants.
