Sol Steinmetz was an American lexicographer and etymologist known for his work documenting 20th-century English vocabulary. He collaborated on the Barnhart Dictionary of New English across its 1973, 1980, and 1990 editions, tracking neologisms and slang. Later, he served as a dictionary editor at Random House, where he continued to research and compile comprehensive reference works on American English idioms and phrases.
