The Calliope Hummingbird (Selasphorus calliope) is the smallest bird native to the United States and Canada. Adult males are recognizable by their distinctive magenta streaks on the throat and weigh roughly 2.5 grams, while females are slightly larger and lack the bright coloring. These birds breed in the mountainous regions of the western United States and spend their winters in Mexico. Despite their tiny size, they undertake one of the longest migrations of any hummingbird relative to their body length.
