The Battle of Nicopolis was fought on 25 September 1396 near Nicopolis, in present-day Bulgaria. An Ottoman army under Sultan Bayezid I defeated a multinational crusading force that included French, Burgundian, Hungarian, German, and other European troops. The crusaders suffered a major defeat, and many nobles were captured or killed. The battle confirmed Ottoman control in the lower Danube region and was one of the largest clashes between the Ottoman state and a late medieval European crusade.
