description Hercules and Cacus Overview
Hercules and Cacus is a colossal marble group by the Florentine sculptor Baccio Bandinelli. The sculpture stands beside the entrance to the Palazzo Vecchio in Piazza della Signoria, Florence, and depicts the mythological hero Hercules overpowering the fire-breathing giant Cacus. Commissioned under Medici patronage, it was completed and unveiled in 1534 as part of the civic sculpture programme surrounding Michelangelo's David.
