The sculpture stands beside the entrance to the Palazzo Vecchio in Piazza della Signoria, Florence, and depicts the mythological hero Hercules overpowering the fire-breathing giant Cacus. Commissioned under Medici patronage, it was completed and unveiled in 1534 as part of the civic sculpture programme surrounding Michelangelo's David.
