Bust of Francesco d'Este by Bernini

The work depicts Francesco I d'Este, who was the Duke of Modena and Reggio in the mid-17th century. He was a powerful Italian nobleman who sought to elevate his court's prestige by commissioning Europe's most famous sculptor.

Bernini completed the Baroque marble portrait around 1650, during a highly prolific period of his career. It was commissioned to solidify Francesco's status among European royalty without requiring the Duke to actually travel to Rome.

Bernini famously never met the Duke, which was a major challenge for creating a realistic royal portrait. Instead, Bernini relied on standard painted portraits and descriptions to capture the essence of the ruler.

The famous marble sculpture is permanently housed in the Museo Estense in Modena, Italy. It is widely celebrated for its dramatic sense of movement and dynamic sweeping drapery that gives the illusion the Duke is turning toward the viewer.
