The luminous hake, Steindachneria argentea, is a deep-water marine fish and the only recognized species in the family Steindachneriidae. It is distinguished by a ventral bioluminescent organ beneath the head and along the underside of the body. The species inhabits the western Atlantic, including deep waters associated with the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean region, and has been recorded at depths approaching 800 metres.
