Cetshwayo kaMpande was king of the Zulu kingdom from 1872 until its defeat by Britain in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. His forces destroyed much of a British column at the Battle of Isandlwana, although Britain later captured the Zulu capital and took him prisoner. Exiled to Cape Town, Cetshwayo subsequently traveled to London and was later permitted to return to part of his former kingdom.
