Kitano Tenmangu is a major Shinto shrine in Kyoto established in 947 CE, dedicated to the Heian-period scholar and politician Sugawara no Michizane. Following his death in exile, he was deified as Tenjin, the patron kami of learning and scholarship. The shrine grounds are famous for their extensive plum tree orchards, which bloom in early spring, as well as traditional tea houses. It remains highly popular among students seeking divine assistance during school examination periods.
