Basílica de Santa Luzia, Viana do Castelo

Construction began in 1904 on Monte de Santa Luzia above the city of Viana do Castelo in northern Portugal. The project took several decades to complete, with the church's distinctive dome and twin towers finished in the mid-20th century.

The building blends Neo-Byzantine and Neo-Romanesque architectural elements, with a centralized dome plan reminiscent of Byzantine churches combined with Romanesque rounded arches and rose windows. The architect was Miguel Ventura Terra, a prominent Portuguese architect of the early 20th century.

Visitors can reach the basilica via the Santa Luzia funicular railway, which ascends Monte de Santa Luzia from the city center of Viana do Castelo. The funicular has been operating since the early 20th century and provides scenic views during the climb.

The church is officially known as the Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, though it is commonly called the Basílica de Santa Luzia because of its location on Monte de Santa Luzia. The name Santa Luzia refers to Saint Lucy, to whom a earlier chapel on the hill was dedicated.
